2020 Vassal World Cup vs Brobafett

In this game, I was paired against BrobaFett, who was running Sloane Aces with an ISD2 and Quasar. He also had the bid and I knew that I was going second. He picked my Rift Ambush and then put his ISD down first I placed my fleet on the other side of the pile of obstacles. My goal here was simply to either separate his Quasar and ISD or force them both to fly through the rocks. After deployment, I moved he rocks to cause as much trouble as I could and then made the Quasar do a speed one maneuver onto a rock and increased its speed. Broba set Pryce for round 2. Here is the opening of round 1:

In the first round, I positioned the Dictor and Demo to pounce on the Quasar before it could activate. I was not at all focused on the squadron play and ended up blundering quite a bit in my placement of Tel in relation to Dengar. Here is the opening of round 2:

In the second round, Broba used his ISD with Flight Controllers and a Hondo token to alpha-strike my squadrons and scalpel Dengar out first followed by Morna Kee before either could activate. In return, Demo was able to score a couple damage from long range (Thanks Romodi) and then unload the ExRacks at close range to finish it off without any help from the Dictor. Here I could have cut and run, but I figured that if I did, Broba would be able to kill my Gozanti and the rest of my squadrons and pull off the win. I knew I needed to try for the tabling. Not ideal. I was basically hoping for a terrible roll from his ISD. In the squadron phase, I managed to kill Saber Squadron with my Decimators. Here is the opening of round 3:

With help from Maarek/Jendon, Broba was able to drop the Dictor after I clipped my own Rift in he fourth round. We called it at that point as there was no way for me to kill his ISD and Demo was exiting the fight. Here is the final game state:

In the end, given the loss of my Gozanti and remaining Decimators, Broba won 302-122. This was a tough match for me and I knew that going in. I think I made the mistake of focusing on the Quasar. Broba’s ISD was equally well suited as a carrier and was able to compensate for the loss without issue. Had I focused on the ISD instead of the Quasar, that would have been the better option. Going for the Quasar first and then realizing that I needed to kill the ISD as well put me dreadfully out of position for the optimal follow up. In any case, great game from Broba!
